TRON BIKE! (Street Legal, Electric + Affordable, Worth-Getting Alternatives)

preview

Some quick stats before the video proof (followed by a look at their alternatives):

  • Speed: Up to 100 mph
  • Range: About 100 miles (what does that look like? see after video!)
  • Recharge Time: ~0.5 hours (I’ve seen another estimate at 3.5 hours, fyi)
  • Power Source: Completely Electric
  • Price: $55,000 (cheaper alternatives noted below)
  • Riding like you own the city: Priceless :P

I started considering what a limited-range vehicle could do in terms of distance. One of the interviews (shown below) about the TRON bike/light cycle came up with another nugget: evolve motorcycles makes scooters that, on the interview itself, suggested that one of their bikes, less than $5K, could get a range of 120mph (see 2:08 on video below):

So that to me says that I might be able to get around a city/area, provided the range of the bike/scooter is long enough, for either the scooter or the $55,000 TRON bike. To do so, I looked at a number of cities and gave them 40-mile radii.

(The 40 mile radius circle comes from using the 100 mile range of the TRON bike, assuming that any visit within the range includes “gas” for the return trip, and that the 20% off accounts for variations in travel distance since we rarely travel in straight lines, point to point.)

This is for Boston…

This is for San Jose.

And here are a number of extra cities I did, plus a link to do your own radius maps:

Vancouver, Toronto, New York, Edmonton, Calgary, Montreal, Los Angeles, Orlando and Miami, Portland

Based on the range of 40 miles (there and back again for 100 or 120 miles), it seems like it would make sense to get a local, electric form of transportation that can get you around. I’m going to investigate this a bit further, put up some updates/results. Would appreciate any thoughts/comments too :)
